Wondering what to do in the Cévennes?

4-star campsite to visit the Cévennes - Camping La Dourbie
In the Cévennes, discover a history of freedom, the Stevenson Trail and breathtaking gorges and valleys.

The Cévennes are a treasure trove of surprises. This region of Occitanie has a remarkable history, inherited from the past and modern at the same time.

  • It was a centre of the Protestant struggle in the 1700s.
  • This was when the Huguenots of the Cévennes region, known as the Camisards, led an insurrection against the persecutions linked to the revocation of the Edict of Nantes.
  • A museum called "the museum of the desert" tells the story.
  • Then Robert Louis Stevenson brought them to light in his "Journey with a Donkey in the Cévennes".
  • The author recounts his journey on foot, accompanied by his donkey. In 1878, he set off from the Haute-Loire, crossed the Lozère and finished in the Gard. Around 200 km.
  • Last but not least, there are a number of facilities in the area:
    - to supervise the sporting activities of your dreams,
    - and to provide you with top-quality accommodation.

Gorges and paths between Causses and Cévennes

With its alternating landscapes of limestone plateaux and valleys, the Cévennes National Park is a natural curiosity.
The land is teeming with dazzling flora and fauna.
Golden eagles, capercaillie, bearded vultures and griffon vultures, to name but a few of the feathered creatures, are happy to live side by side and tolerate each other.

The Cévennes landscape is still just as Stevenson discovered it on his journey.
If you're a walker, you'll love setting off along the trail. Depending on the season, you can enjoy the beautiful sight of chestnut trees in flower and perhaps even witness the transhumance.
In 2011, the Causses and Cévennes were included on the list of World Heritage sites by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee.
An environment where culture, pastoralism and the great outdoors come together to transport you into the history of the Cévennes.

What's the most beautiful place in the Cévennes?

The steam train is an effortless way to discover the most picturesque spots in the Cévennes: the old silkworm nurseries, the bamboo grove at Anduze...

However, the gorges in the Cévennes are a must. These phenomenal gorges can be reached by canoe, on foot or by mountain bike.
These paths cross the surrounding Grands Causses and in particular the Causse Méjean.

You'll be lucky to have several gorges to discover!
The Gorges du Tarn, the Gorges de la Jonte and the Gorges de la Dourbie are close to the Cévennes.
